For several years, an urban, organic 14-acre farm flourished in a
warehouse area of South Central Los Angeles, its produce feeding
hundreds of needy families. A businessman bought the land from the city
in 2003, and in 2006, closed and locked it off, setting off a strong
protest by the farmers and many supporters. Before a court could rule,
the owner twice sent in bulldozers, completely destroying the Farm’s
unique plants and trees, but many farmers continue to hold vigils and
pray for the return of the Farm.
